When it comes to adrenaline-pumping adventures, few experiences can rival the exhilaration of traversing Telluride’s Via Ferrata. This 2-mile journey along the exposed side of a mountain delivers thrills, excitement, and breathtaking scenery, making it a must-do for thrill-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Translated as “iron road” in Italian, a via ferrata combines mountain hiking with a network of cables and iron rungs, providing climbers with the necessary support and safety measures to navigate the rugged terrain. And Telluride’s Via Ferrata is no exception, offering a narrow trail along sheer cliffs and vertiginous drops that will leave you clinging to the edge – quite literally.
Joined by my adventurous friends Trena and Alex, we embarked on this unforgettable journey, ready to conquer the jagged mountainside that loomed before us. But first, we had to gear up with harnesses, carabiners, and helmets, knowing that safety was paramount as we embarked on this daring adventure.
As we began our ascent, each step brought us closer to the edge, where we were affixed to the stone by two carabiners attached to our climbing harnesses. The trail, no wider than a couple of feet, demanded deliberate steps as we navigated loose rock above sheer cliffs, our hearts pounding with every precarious footfall.
But it was when we reached “The Main Event” that the true test of our mettle began. With a 500-foot vertical drop below us, we relied on iron rungs and steel cables to navigate the exposed rock face, our adrenaline surging as we conquered each obstacle with determination and grit.

Yet, the adventure didn’t end there. Along the route, we encountered technical and exposed sections that required both physical strength and mental fortitude. From pulling ourselves up small overhangs to descending steep gullies, every challenge pushed us to our limits and beyond.
But amidst the exhilaration and adrenaline, there was also a sense of camaraderie and accomplishment, knowing that we had faced our fears and emerged victorious. As we reached the end of the Via Ferrata, we were filled with a profound sense of achievement and gratitude for the unforgettable experience.
Telluride’s Via Ferrata may be physically and mentally challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding – a testament to the power of human resilience and the beauty of pushing beyond our comfort zones. So, if you’re seeking adventure and excitement in the heart of the Colorado mountains, look no further than Telluride’s Via Ferrata. Your next great adventure awaits!
