Day 2: Exploring Canyons of the Ancients, Four Corners, and a Spontaneous Trip to Lake Powell

Waking Up to a Breathtaking Sunrise
We woke up to a breathtaking sunrise casting golden hues across the rugged landscape of Rock Creek Canyon in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. The interplay of light and shadow on the rolling hills and deep canyon was mesmerizing. As we enjoyed our breakfast with this stunning view, we felt truly immersed in the beauty and solitude of the backcountry. The tranquility of the desert morning was unbeatable, but it was time to pack up and keep moving. We wanted to start our hike early before the sun became too intense. Our next destination was near Cortez, Colorado.

The breathtaking sunrise over Rock Creek Canyon, a perfect start to our day in the Canyons of the Ancients.

Four Corners Hike – Canyons of the Ancients National Monument
We began our morning with a hike through Lower Sand Canyon Trail, a scenic path leading through striking rock formations and desert vegetation. Several of the ruins are found along this trail, offering glimpses into the past as we walked among the remnants of ancient structures. The trail then connected with East Rock Creek Trail, which featured a massive natural arch and unique rock formations. The viewpoints along the way provided sweeping vistas of the expansive canyon below, a stunning reward for our early morning trek.

The landscape was dotted with Ancestral Puebloan ruins tucked beneath sandstone alcoves, a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people who once called this place home. Some ruins, like the well-preserved cliff dwellings, provided a glimpse into their intricate architecture and daily lives.

Along the East Rock Creek loop, we encountered a massive natural arch that resembled the high ceiling of a cathedral. The sandstone arch stood tall against the bright blue sky, framing the rugged desert beyond and offering a perfect spot to pause and take in the grandeur of the landscape. As we made our way back to the trailhead, we spotted a strikingly colorful lizard basking in the sun. Its vivid green and blue hues contrasted beautifully against the red sandstone, adding a touch of unexpected vibrancy to the rugged terrain.

Next, we finally arrived at the Four Corners Monument! This unique landmark is the only place in the United States where you can stand in four states at once—Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. The monument is marked by a circular medallion, with boundary lines extending outward, making it easy to step between states in a single motion. It was a surreal experience to straddle the boundaries of four states, and our favorite moment was sharing a kiss while standing in all four at the same time.

The site is managed by the Navajo Nation and is surrounded by a visitor plaza featuring market stalls with handmade crafts and jewelry from Native artisans. Fun Fact: The Four Corners Monument has six different governments with jurisdictional boundaries—the four states, as well as the Navajo Nation and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe Reservation.

Spontaneous Trip to Lake Powell
Our journey took an unexpected yet thrilling turn when Bill, knowing how much I love Lake Powell, suggested we make our way there from Four Corners. Without hesitation, we set off toward southern Utah, taking in the ever-changing scenery along the way. The drive was mesmerizing, with vast desert landscapes, towering mesas, and the occasional glimpse of red rock formations bathed in the golden afternoon light.

Arriving at Lake Powell, we set up camp right on the beach. The calm waters, surrounded by dramatic sandstone cliffs, made for a stunning evening. Watching the sun set over the lake, reflecting brilliant hues across the sky, was the perfect way to end an adventurous day.

This adventure was shaping up to be even more incredible than we had imagined. Stay tuned for the next part of our journey as we continue exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the Southwest!
