Conquering Grays and Torreys Peaks via Kelso Ridge

Grays Peak and Torreys Peak, towering at 14,270 and 14,267 feet respectively, offered a breathtaking challenge for our group as we tackled the Kelso Ridge Loop. This class 3 terrain in Colorado provided a heart-pounding adventure filled with scrambling, exposed ridges, and unforgettable views. It was our first time navigating Kelso Ridge to reach these iconic summits, and the experience was nothing short of exhilarating.

An Early Start

Our journey began in the early hours of the morning, with headlamps lighting the way through the darkness. The crisp, quiet air carried the promise of adventure as we steadily climbed toward Kelso Ridge. By the time the first hints of dawn broke over the horizon, we had reached the ridge and were treated to a stunning sunrise that painted the landscape in golden hues.

Scrambling Up Kelso Ridge

Kelso Ridge is not for the faint of heart. The trail involves navigating solid rock faces, loose scree, and some challenging class 3 moves. Before reaching the knife-edge, we came across an old mining shack perched precariously on the slope, a reminder of the area’s rich history. Each step brought us closer to Torreys Peak, with the jagged, winding ridge providing awe-inspiring views of the valleys and mountains below.

The ridge’s knife-edge section was a particular highlight—a daring but sturdy stretch of rock that demanded both focus and a sense of adventure. Crossing the knife-edge, I couldn’t resist throwing my arms up in a moment of sheer joy and accomplishment.

Reaching Torreys Peak

Standing atop Torreys Peak at 14,267 feet, we took a moment to savor the achievement and the incredible panorama around us. The view toward Grays Peak, our next destination, was both daunting and inspiring. From this vantage point, we could see the saddle that connected the two peaks, a path that promised another rigorous but rewarding climb.

On to Grays Peak

Descending into the saddle, we marveled at how far we had already come. The climb up to Grays Peak tested our endurance, but the summit’s rewards made every step worthwhile. At 14,270 feet, we celebrated our second summit of the day, exhausted but exhilarated. Relaxing on the peak, we soaked in the expansive views of Colorado’s rugged terrain, feeling both humbled and inspired.

Moments of Connection

This hike marked a milestone for Bill and me—our first 14,000+ foot hike and summit trip together. For Greg and me, reaching our sixth and seventh 14er summits added a deep sense of pride and accomplishment to the journey. Sharing this incredible experience with my son and our amazing friends felt truly special. I feel so blessed to have forged a deeper connection with both the awe-inspiring beauty of the mountains and the camaraderie of our group.

Wildlife and Landscape

On our way back to the trailhead, we encountered the vibrant landscape of wildflowers dotting the green valleys and patches of lingering snow. A pair of mountain goats crossed our path, adding a touch of wild magic to the experience. The jagged peaks, rocky trails, and expansive views created a tapestry of natural beauty that will remain etched in my memory.

Reflections on Kelso Ridge

Kelso Ridge provided a thrilling introduction to class 3 scrambling and exposed ridges. The route demanded technical skill, courage, and determination, yet every challenge brought a sense of accomplishment and awe. With each climb and exposed section, we found ourselves more connected to the raw beauty of the mountains. Despite the difficulties, or perhaps because of them, the experience was profoundly rewarding and unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

Grays and Torreys Peaks via Kelso Ridge was a true test of our skills and endurance, but the memories we created along the way made every effort worthwhile. From the breathtaking sunrise to the triumphant moments on each summit, this adventure reminded me that life’s greatest rewards often lie beyond the most challenging climbs. These mountains taught us to push through fear, embrace the unknown, and celebrate the journey. Here’s to many more hikes, scrambles, and summits in the future!
