A Leisurely Morning Start
On the second day of our adventure, I had the rare luxury of sleeping in. When I finally emerged from my tent, the crisp mountain air greeted me, and I eagerly started the day with a steaming cup of coffee. The anticipation of the hike ahead filled me with excitement as Jackie, Bill and I prepared to leave the Granite Canyon campground and make our way to Devil’s Shelf campground along the Teton Crest Trail.
Climbing to Marion Lake
Our journey began with a vigorous ascent from the lush meadows of the canyon up to the serene Marion Lake. The lake, a pristine mirror of the sky, was so breathtaking we couldn’t resist pausing to soak in the tranquility. As we continued our climb, we reached Fox Creek Pass, perched at an impressive 9,600 feet. The landscape unfolded before us, revealing the windswept plateau of Death Canyon Shelf, with Spearhead Peak and the Tetons standing sentinel in the distance.

Narrow Trails and Expansive Views
The trail narrowed, barely wide enough for a single person, adding an exhilarating edge to our trek. As we cleared the pass, the Tetons re-emerged, their jagged peaks piercing the sky. The abundance and variety of wildflowers surprised me, a vibrant carpet of colors contrasting against the stark rocky terrain as we left the trees behind. For miles, it felt like we had the wilderness to ourselves, the silence only broken by the crunch of our boots.
Discovering Hidden Plateaus
The hike was a visual feast, a hidden world of high plateaus behind the rugged facade of the Tetons. I marveled at the vastness, the feeling of being perched on a shelf high above the valleys and canyons. When we finally reached our campsite on Death Canyon Shelf, it was possibly the most beautiful campsite I’ve had the pleasure to stay at. The panoramic views were unparalleled, and we spent the evening watching the last light fade over Death Canyon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a fitting end to a remarkable day, leaving me in awe of the natural beauty and the profound peace of the wilderness.

Reflecting on the Journey
Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep gratitude for the untouched beauty of the wilderness and the sense of accomplishment that comes from pushing beyond the familiar. The serenity of the Death Canyon Shelf, with its panoramic views and profound silence, left an indelible mark on my heart. I drifted to sleep under a blanket of stars, eagerly anticipating the adventures that awaited us in the days to come.
