Exploring the outdoors has a way of turning an ordinary day into an extraordinary adventure, and today was no exception. My son Greg and I ventured into the rugged beauty of the San Rafael Swell, taking on the famous Ding and Dang Canyons. While I might have gotten a little “dinged” up along the way, I had a dang good time!
Starting Early at Ding and Dang Canyons
We arrived at the trailhead early, with me taking a moment to soak in the stillness of the desert while Greg got his gear ready. We decided to tackle the loop trail through Ding and Dang Canyons, starting with Ding Canyon and circling around the back of Dang Canyon, to finish back at the trail fork.
It wasn’t long before we started hiking through a tight corridor in Ding Canyon. While the space was narrow, it wasn’t uncomfortably so, and the canyon eventually opened up to reveal incredible views. As we navigated the 6-mile trail, the towering cliffs and scattered boulders created a playground of rugged beauty, each turn more captivating than the last.
One of the most stunning features of the canyons was the intricate honeycomb-like patterns carved into the sandstone walls by wind and water. These formations were absolutely mesmerizing—a true testament to nature’s artistry. The patterns, combined with the variety of sandstone textures and hues, made it nearly impossible to keep my eyes on the trail. I kept looking up, awestruck by the beauty that surrounded us.
Eventually, the trail led us to an open desert area on the backside of Ding Canyon before we transitioned into Dang Canyon.

The Challenges of Dang Canyon
Dang Canyon offered a bit more of a technical challenge compared to Ding Canyon. With its few down climbs and slightly more demanding terrain, it required some teamwork navigate carefully. These sections added an extra layer of excitement to the adventure, making the hike feel like an exhilarating obstacle course.
The sandstone walls of Dang Canyon were equally stunning, showcasing the same intricate patterns and dramatic textures that made Ding Canyon so memorable. The solitude of the trail made the experience even more rewarding, allowing us to fully absorb the natural beauty around us.

A Scenic Side Trip to Capitol Reef
After completing our loop through Ding and Dang Canyons, we decided to take a side trip to Capitol Reef National Park. The drive was scenic, but the highlight was hiking to Hickman Bridge, a massive sandstone arch that stood proudly against the bright blue sky. The trail to the bridge meandered through vibrant desert vegetation and colorful rock formations, making it a relaxing and awe-inspiring experience.
Cooling Off in the Fremont River
By the time we wrapped up the Hickman Bridge hike, the desert heat had reached 90 degrees. A refreshing dip in the Fremont River was just what I needed to cool down and recharge. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of desert water after a long, hot hike—it was the perfect way to rejuvenate.
Ending the Day at Sunset Point
To cap off the day, Greg and I made our way to Sunset Point, one of Capitol Reef’s most picturesque overlooks. Sitting on a rocky outcrop, we unpacked sandwiches and s’mores cookies and enjoyed our simple meal while the golden light of sunset transformed the park’s red rock cliffs into a glowing masterpiece. It felt like the perfect way to end the adventure—just the two of us, taking it all in.

Reflections on an Unforgettable Adventure
This day had everything—thrilling slot canyons, refreshing rivers, and special moments with my son. Ding and Dang provided a mix of fun and challenge, from the mesmerizing sandstone walls of Ding Canyon to the technical climbs of Dang Canyon. The intricate honeycomb patterns carved by wind and water, combined with the towering cliffs and ever-changing rock formations, created a hiking experience I won’t soon forget.
Capitol Reef added its own magic, with its breathtaking hikes and peaceful overlooks. From navigating narrow canyon passages to enjoying a sunset meal, every moment reminded me of the magic of the outdoors. More than anything, I’m grateful for the time spent exploring with Greg. These shared moments in nature are memories I’ll cherish forever.
Here’s to many more adventures that leave you a little scraped, a little tired, and completely filled with gratitude!
