Summiting Clouds Rest on Our Yosemite Backpacking Adventure (Day 2)

On the second day of our Yosemite backpacking trip, it was a chilly start to the morning, and none of us wanted to leave the warmth of our sleeping bags. As the sun rose and began to warm the air, the day promised perfect hiking weather. The sun glistened over Sunrise Lake, and not a cloud was in sight. Today, Jackie, Chantelle, and I were set to hike a total of 8.5 miles, with the goal of summiting Clouds Rest at 9,926 ft.

Morning at Sunrise Lake

After a hearty breakfast, we packed up our gear and began our trek. The trail started with a brutal, steep uphill climb, gradually at first, then more steeply as we approached Clouds Rest. The ascent challenged our endurance, but the stunning surroundings kept our spirits high.

The Ascent to Clouds Rest

As we neared the granite base of Clouds Rest, we prepared for the final 100 feet of scrambling. The approach involved hiking along a narrow ridge with steep drop-offs on either side, a thrilling experience for any hiker. Finally reaching the summit, we were rewarded with mind-blowing views. The 360-degree panorama of the surrounding Sierra Nevada was breathtaking. We could see many of Yosemite’s most famous features, including the Quarter Domes, Mount Hoffmann, Vogelsang Peak, and the Cathedral Range. Looking straight down, Tenaya Creek lay 5000 feet below!

Lunch with a View

We took a long lunch at the summit, soaking in the panoramic views of Yosemite’s wilderness. It was a perfect moment of tranquility and awe, surrounded by nature’s grandeur. The vastness of the landscape made all the effort to get there worthwhile.

Descending to Sunrise Creek

After lunch, we began our descent down the other side of Clouds Rest. This part of the trail was less traveled, offering us a peaceful hike. Most hikers start from Tenaya Lake and do not venture up this side. The trek down from Clouds Rest was a steep, winding descent to Sunrise Creek. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views of Half Dome with El Capitan in the distance, framed by massive ancient Junipers.

Setting Up Camp at Sunrise Creek

After many miles and numerous switchbacks through the forest, we reached Sunrise Creek and set up our campsite along its bubbling banks. The forested area provided a serene setting for our second night in Yosemite. The sound of the creek and the beauty of the forest created a perfect backdrop as we settled in for the night.

Reflection and Anticipation

Day 2 of our Yosemite adventure was filled with incredible views, challenging hikes, and unforgettable moments. Summiting Clouds Rest was a highlight, offering some of the most spectacular vistas in the park. As we settled into our sleeping bags, we reflected on the day’s journey and eagerly anticipated the adventures that awaited us on the following days. Yosemite’s wilderness continued to amaze and inspire us, and we couldn’t wait to see what else the park had in store. Tomorrow, we would tackle the famous Half Dome, a bucket-list item for many and the pinnacle of our trip.
