Earlier this October, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Shelf Road Craggin’ Classic, an event hosted by the American Alpine Club at the stunning Shelf Road climbing area in Colorado. Known for its world-class limestone cliffs, this event combined the beauty of nature, the thrill of climbing, and the camaraderie of an amazing climbing community.

A Weekend of Learning and Connection

The highlight of my weekend was participating in the Intro to Sport Climbing for Women clinic, led by the legendary Olivia Hsu. Olivia’s expertise and supportive guidance made this clinic a truly enriching experience. She didn’t just teach us the technical skills; she also instilled confidence and a deep appreciation for the art of climbing.

I focused on honing my crack climbing skills—a challenge that pushed me both physically and mentally. Working through the routes at Cactus Cliff Crag, I was reminded of why I love climbing: the delicate balance of strength and strategy, the exhilarating connection with the rock, and the satisfaction of conquering something that once seemed insurmountable.

The Best Limestone in the West

Shelf Road’s limestone cliffs are nothing short of spectacular. The rock formations are a climber’s dream—solid, textured, and perfectly suited for all skill levels. From beginner-friendly routes to advanced technical climbs, there’s something for everyone. The crags themselves are nestled within a rugged, picturesque landscape of sagebrush and juniper, creating an unforgettable backdrop for the weekend’s adventures.

Community and Empowerment

One of the most rewarding aspects of the event was the incredible group of women I met. Sharing this experience with such a passionate and encouraging group made it even more special. We swapped climbing tips, cheered each other on, and celebrated our individual successes together. The sense of community and empowerment was palpable, and it reinforced just how inclusive and uplifting the climbing world can be.

Reflections on the Craggin’ Classic

As I drove home from Shelf Road, sore but exhilarated, I couldn’t stop replaying the weekend in my mind. This wasn’t just a climbing event—it was a celebration of learning, growth, and connection. I left with new skills, new friends, and a renewed sense of what it means to push your limits and embrace challenges.
