Ropes, Rocks, and Rocktoberfest: A Perfect Day of Adventure in Golden and Denver

Prepping for Adventure: Rappelling Practice in Golden, Colorado

Bill and I spent an incredible afternoon in Golden, Colorado, sharpening our rappelling skills in preparation for an upcoming trip. Golden, with its rugged terrain and breathtaking views, provided the perfect backdrop for this adventure. It was the ideal environment to not only practice but also reconnect with the thrill of outdoor exploration.

We gathered with a group of friends on a sunny day, setting up ropes and gear on the iconic crags that overlook the town. The mix of open spaces and dramatic rock faces offered a great variety of spots for practicing different techniques. We focused on mastering anchor systems, rope management, and ensuring a smooth descent, skills that are critical for our upcoming adventure.

The camaraderie of the group made the experience even more memorable. We encouraged each other, shared tips, and even swapped a few funny stories about past climbing and rappelling experiences. The view from the top, with Golden’s rolling hills and winding roads below, was absolutely breathtaking—a reminder of why we love spending time in the outdoors.

One of the highlights of the day was getting to see everyone’s progress. Whether it was someone’s first time rappelling or another friend perfecting advanced techniques, it was exciting to be part of such a supportive environment. Even with some snow patches scattered on the ground, the sunny skies and crisp fall air kept us energized throughout the afternoon.

After wrapping up our practice, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. It was reassuring to know we’re prepared for the challenges ahead, and the whole experience reinforced our love for climbing and rappelling.

3rd Annual REI Rocktoberfest in Denver

After our outdoor adventure, we made our way to the 3rd Annual REI Rocktoberfest Climbing Festival at the REI flagship store in downtown Denver. Hosted by Black Diamond and other organizations, this event is a celebration of the local climbing community and an opportunity to bring outdoor enthusiasts together.

The REI store itself, an impressive 90,000-square-foot space, features a towering 45-foot indoor climbing wall, which served as the centerpiece for the festival. The event was packed with energy, offering something for everyone—live music, delicious food and drinks, a silent auction, and plenty of climbing inspiration.

We loved seeing how the event supported the climbing community, not only by showcasing new gear and techniques but also by creating a space to connect and share our passion for the sport. The silent auction and activities benefited local outdoor initiatives, making the festival more than just a gathering—it was a way to give back to the community that makes these adventures possible.

The combination of a day spent rappelling in Golden and an evening celebrating climbing at Rocktoberfest was the perfect mix of preparation, fun, and inspiration. As we look forward to our next big trip, we feel confident, connected, and even more excited for the adventures ahead!
