A Weekend in Grand Junction: Rattlesnake Arches & Colorado National Monument

Bill, Greg, and I spent a weekend soaking up the rugged beauty of western Colorado while staying in a cozy KOA cabin in Grand Junction. From exploring hidden desert wonders to driving through towering red-rock canyons, this trip was an absolute feast for the senses.

Rattlesnake Arches in McInnis Canyon NCA

We set out early to explore Rattlesnake Arches, a natural wonder in McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area. Known for having the second-largest concentration of natural arches outside Utah, this place feels wild and untamed.

The trail took us through rugged desert terrain, where the sun warmed the red sandstone beneath our boots. As we hiked, the smell of dusty sagebrush mixed with the occasional breeze, and the sound of gravel crunching underfoot echoed through the silence. We scrambled over rocky outcrops and paused often to drink in the sweeping views: a labyrinth of red cliffs, plateaus, and deep canyons stretching into the horizon.

Reaching the arches was nothing short of magical. Towering sandstone formations carved by wind and time loomed like ancient sentinels. Light filtered through the arches, casting golden patterns on the ground. The way the red rock glowed in the late morning sun felt surreal—like stepping into a painting.

One particularly stunning arch framed the blue sky perfectly, and as we stood beneath it, we marveled at how small we felt in this vast, timeless landscape.

Relaxing at the KOA Cabin

After a long day of hiking, we headed back to the KOA in Grand Junction. Staying in a cabin gave us the comforts of home while still feeling immersed in the outdoors. We spent the evening unwinding, sharing stories, and enjoying a quiet night under the stars. The KOA cabins were the perfect basecamp for our adventures.

Driving Rim Rock Drive: Colorado National Monument

On day two, we explored Colorado National Monument —a land of dramatic mesas, sheer-walled canyons, and fiery rock spires that rise like giants from the earth. Rim Rock Drive, the 23-mile scenic route through the monument, was an adventure all its own.

The drive wound up steep switchbacks carved into the canyon walls, offering heart-stopping views at every turn. We stopped often at the overlooks, stepping out of the car to feel the breeze on our faces and take in the sheer magnitude of the landscape.

From Cold Shivers Point, the canyon seemed to drop endlessly into a maze of shadow and sunlit rock, and the distant cry of a hawk echoed through the air. At Independence Monument View, we stared in awe at the tall monolith that rises dramatically from the canyon floor, its reddish hues glowing against a cloudless blue sky.

Each stop gave us a new perspective—vast mesas fading into layers of purple and pink in the distance, rock walls painted with streaks of ochre, rust, and cream. The sun heated the stone beneath our hands as we leaned against railings to take it all in, and the silence of the canyons was punctuated only by the whisper of the wind.

Driving Rim Rock Drive felt like traveling through a giant natural art gallery, with each turn unveiling a new masterpiece. As the day came to a close, we watched the sky shift from gold to dusky lavender as the sun disappeared behind the mesas.

Grand Junction and its surrounding landscapes offered an unforgettable weekend of natural beauty and adventure. From hiking among sandstone arches to driving through one of Colorado’s most stunning monuments, every moment was filled with rugged grandeur. If you’re looking for a place where desert landscapes come alive with color, texture, and quiet magic, this corner of Colorado is calling.

The KOA cabin offered a peaceful retreat, and the area’s diverse landscapes reminded me why I love exploring the American West.
