Bill and I embarked on our first winter canyoneering adventure in North Wash, Utah. Despite the temperatures being in the teens, the sun provided some warmth, and we bundled up in many layers to face the cold.
Setting Off on a Wintery Expedition

We set off in mid-January, greeted by a group of friends, the crisp air and a light dusting of snow that transformed the canyons into a winter wonderland. Our journey began with a steep climb to Hogwarts Canyon, navigating a smaller, shallow ravine. The ascent was quite challenging, with a gain of around 520 feet in under half a mile. Once we reached the ridge, the breathtaking beauty of the snowy landscape unfolded before us. Having the canyon all to ourselves made the experience even more rare and special.
Conquering Fears and Challenging Knees
Leading us on this adventure were Christian and his friends, a fantastic group of people who made the experience even more enjoyable. With their guidance and support, Bill and I learned a great deal about winter canyoneering. There were moments when I had to work past my fears, especially in some of the more daunting sections of the canyon. My knees were put to the test with a few challenging moves, but every bit of effort was worth it.
Exploring North Wash Classics: Hogwarts Canyon
Our winter canyoneering adventure in North Wash began with the mesmerizing Hogwarts Canyon, a North Wash Classic. The canyon lived up to its magical name, with unique rock formations and narrow passages that created an enchanting atmosphere. The fresh snow added an extra layer of beauty, transforming the already stunning landscape into a winter wonderland. Navigating through Hogwarts Canyon was a thrilling adventure, with icy sections that tested our skills and added to the excitement.
Hogwarts Canyon, often described as a “mini-slot,” offered a series of stunning views from the approach, setting the stage for the fun that awaited us. The second rappel was particularly memorable, depositing us in a room under a natural bridge with breathtaking views of the arches above. As I stemmed over a “semi-keeper” pothole, I was acutely aware of the icy water below, knowing that slipping into the pothole would mean a very cold dip. Every twist and turn in Hogwarts Canyon revealed new wonders, making it an unforgettable experience and quickly earning it a spot among my favorite canyoneering locations.

Practicing Climbing at Blarney Right Fork
We also practiced our up and down climbing skills at Blarney Right Fork, honing our techniques in the winter conditions. The right fork offered a mix of challenges that tested our abilities and helped us improve our climbing skills. The icy rocks and the need for precise movements made it a great training ground for future canyoneering adventures.
A Spectacular Day in the Canyons
Despite the cold, the day was spectacular. The quiet, serene environment allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty and adventure of the canyons. The camaraderie among our group, the thrill of overcoming obstacles, and the stunning winter scenery made this an adventure to remember.
Winter canyoneering in North Wash was an incredible experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and deepened my appreciation for the sport. If you ever get the chance to try winter canyoneering, I highly recommend it. The challenges are great, but the rewards are even greater.
Here’s to more adventures and the joy of discovering new experiences!
