Bill and I embarked on a magical winter adventure to Cassidy Arch in Capitol Reef National Park. A fresh dusting of snow from the previous night had transformed the park into a serene and breathtaking wonderland. Capitol Reef, known for its canyons, arches, cliffs, domes, and bridges, was even more enchanting in its snowy attire.
Grand Wash: A Snowy Wonderland

We began our journey in Grand Wash, a narrow canyon that felt like a secluded paradise in the off-season. The day started grey and cloudy, casting an ethereal light over the snow-covered landscape. As we ventured deeper into the canyon, the sky began to clear, revealing the stunning contrast of blue sky against white-capped rock formations. The tranquility and solitude of winter made it feel as though we had the entire park to ourselves.
Cassidy Arch Trail: A Scenic Ascent
Our adventure continued on the Cassidy Arch Trail, a path that winds along the canyon’s edge over slick rock to a natural arch named after the infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy, who is said to have hidden here. The 7.5 mile roundtrip hike offered us spectacular, uninterrupted views of the park’s winter beauty. We marveled at the snow-dusted canyons and towering cliffs as we ascended. Each step brought us closer to the awe-inspiring arch, and the thrill of the climb was heightened by the stunning scenery around us.
Reaching Cassidy Arch: A Winter Triumph
Reaching Cassidy Arch was like discovering a hidden treasure in the snow. The arch stood majestically against the backdrop of the canyon, its grandeur amplified by the quiet beauty of winter. We stood in awe, taking in the panoramic views and the sense of achievement. The solitude of the off-season allowed us to fully appreciate the arch’s natural splendor without the distraction of crowds.
A Peaceful and Rewarding Experience
Hiking to Cassidy Arch in the winter was one of the most rewarding experiences we’ve had in Capitol Reef National Park. The cool temperatures made the hike invigorating, and the fresh snow added a touch of magic to the landscape. We felt like explorers in a winter wonderland, our footprints the only sign of human presence in the pristine snow.
Winter in Capitol Reef offers a unique and unforgettable adventure. The serene beauty and quiet trails provide a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If you haven’t explored this park in winter, I highly recommend adding it to your bucket list. The tranquility and stunning winter vistas make it a truly special place.
