We got an early start to the day, eager to cover several miles before reaching our final destination. Our journey took us through the iconic Monument Valley, a red-sand desert region renowned for its towering sandstone buttes that seem to defy gravity. The sight of these majestic formations never fails to inspire awe and wonder.
Arrival at Lake Powell
Before long, we arrived at the serene shores of Lake Powell. Our campsite was nestled on the north side of the lake at Warm Creek Bay, a spot known for its stunning views and tranquility. The journey to our campsite was an adventure in itself, taking us through the remote desert country and along the famous Smoky Mountain Road, eventually leading us into the breathtaking Crosby Canyon.
The Scenic Drive Through Crosby Canyon
The drive through Crosby Canyon, a 5-mile stretch of dramatic, twisting gorge, is incredibly scenic. The canyon is filled with many eroded rock formations and layers of different hardness, creating a landscape that looks like it belongs on another planet. The smooth textures and holes in the canyon walls tell a story of a time when the canyon was submerged underwater.
Crosby Canyon is narrow in places, with sandy surfaces that make for an exciting drive. As we navigated the winding road, the canyon gradually opened up to reveal the stunning view of Warm Creek Bay. The countless islands, buttes, and bays stretched out to the horizon, offering good elevated views over the lake and unspoiled lands. The landscape around us was stark and barren yet incredibly colorful, with rolling mud hills in shades of grey, brown, gold, and white contrasting against the distant blue of the lake and the ancient crumbling cliffs.
Camping at Warm Creek Bay
The true reward of our journey was camping on a small peninsula of land that juts out into the bay. This secluded spot provided the perfect setting for an evening of relaxation and reflection. I spent the evening scouting roads for the following day, putting my chair in the lake while my feet cooled off in the water, and watching the sunset behind the colorful cliffs. The sky painted itself in hues of orange, pink, and purple, reflecting off the calm waters of Lake Powell. The beauty and tranquility of the moment were unparalleled.
Morning Bliss
Waking up to the stunning view of Warm Creek Bay with a cup of coffee in hand was the perfect way to start the day. We made homemade biscuits, their warm, buttery aroma blending with the fresh morning air. As we enjoyed our breakfast, we watched people paddleboard on the lake, their silhouettes gliding gracefully across the water. The peacefulness of the morning, combined with the breathtaking scenery, made it clear that this journey was one for the books. The stark yet colorful landscape, the serene waters of Lake Powell, and the dramatic views from Crosby Canyon all came together to create an unforgettable experience.

Our adventure through Monument Valley to Lake Powell was a testament to the incredible natural beauty that can be found in this part of the world. From the towering sandstone buttes to the tranquil waters of Warm Creek Bay, every moment of the journey was filled with awe and wonder. If you ever have the chance to explore this region, don’t hesitate—it’s an experience that will stay with you.
