When you think of beach vacations, Nebraska might not be the first destination that comes to mind. But let me tell you about a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Cornhusker State: Lake McConaughy, Nebraska’s very own oasis.
Our journey to Lake McConaughy began with a bit of adventure, as we braved a hailstorm in Northeastern Colorado. Seeking refuge at a gas station, our dog Lennon sought comfort in my lap, all 80 pounds of him, as the hail pelted our Jeep. But as the storm passed and we arrived at our destination, we were greeted by the most breathtaking sunset, setting the stage for an unforgettable getaway.
Camping right on the beach was a dream come true, with the soft white sand and shimmering waters reminiscent of far-flung tropical destinations. As we settled into our spot, surrounded by the beauty of nature, we knew we were in for a special few days.
Waking up to the gentle breeze and stunning views of the lake, we wasted no time in immersing ourselves in the joys of lakeside living. Lennon bounded eagerly into the sand, while my partner Bill and I prepared breakfast amidst the tranquil surroundings.

The days were filled with endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation. While the dogs frolicked in the water, Bill tried his hand at fishing, while I savored the cool breeze and scenic vistas. Kayaking along the shore provided a unique perspective of the lake’s beauty, while evenings were spent gathered around a beach fire, dancing beneath a canopy of twinkling stars.
As we bid farewell to Lake McConaughy and our beachside paradise, we carried with us memories of sun-drenched days, star-filled nights, and the simple joys of life by the water. And while Nebraska may not boast palm-fringed beaches or azure waters, Lake McConaughy proves that sometimes the most unexpected destinations hold the greatest treasures.
