This past weekend, I embarked on a soul-nourishing journey into the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park, leaving behind the noise and chaos of everyday life to immerse myself in the tranquility of the wilderness. Joined by my adventure companion and son Greg, we set our sights on Skeleton Gulch, a remote alpine oasis nestled amidst the breathtaking backdrop of the Never Summer Mountains.
Our journey began with a drive towards the trailhead, where we were greeted by a serendipitous sight: three majestic moose grazing in the distance, a fortuitous omen for the adventure that lay ahead. The trail to Skeleton Gulch promised seclusion and solitude, winding through some of the park’s least-visited wilderness areas and offering glimpses of untamed beauty at every turn.
En route to our campsite, we paused to admire a picturesque waterfall cascading down the rocky cliffs of Little Yellowstone canyon, a testament to the park’s volcanic past and the enduring power of nature’s forces. Crossing rustic bridges tested our balance and resolve, a reminder of the challenges inherent in backpacking through rugged terrain.

Arriving at Skeleton Gulch, we were greeted by sweeping vistas of lush green meadows, Sawmill Creek murmuring softly in the distance, and towering peaks reaching towards the heavens. It was a perfect setting to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend, surrounded by the majesty of the mountains and the tranquility of nature.
As we settled into camp, the stresses of everyday life melted away, replaced by a sense of peace and contentment found only in the embrace of the wilderness. With each step, each breath of crisp mountain air, we felt a profound connection to the earth and a renewed appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.
As the sun dipped below the horizon and the stars illuminated the night sky, we reveled in the simple pleasures of camp life, grateful for the opportunity to disconnect from the noise of the world and reconnect with the rhythms of nature. In Skeleton Gulch, amidst the towering peaks and whispering pines, we found solace, adventure, and a sense of belonging that will linger in our hearts long after our journey has ended.
