Exploring the High Country: Hiking to Thunder Pass in Rocky Mountain National Park

As the morning sun painted the sky in hues of gold, Greg and I emerged from our tent to be greeted by breathtaking views of Teepee Mountain and the serene beauty of Sawmill Creek. With a sense of anticipation coursing through our veins, we set our sights on Thunder Pass, a remote saddle nestled between Lulu Mountain and Static Peak within State Forest State Park and part of the Never Summer Mountain Range.

Thunder Pass beckoned with the promise of adventure, serving as a remote gateway connecting State Forest State Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Our journey began from the comfort of our campsite in Skeleton Gulch, following the meandering path of the Grand Ditch Trail until we reached the turn-off for Thunder Pass.

As we ascended in elevation, the landscape transformed before our eyes, unfolding into a panorama of alpine meadows and rugged peaks. Crossing babbling creeks and navigating rocky terrain, we pressed onward, fueled by the thrill of exploration and the allure of distant vistas.

The final mile of our ascent led us through the pristine beauty of alpine tundra, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Upon reaching the summit of Thunder Pass, we were greeted by a breathtaking vista of the Valley of Michigan Lakes and the iconic silhouette of Nokhu Crags, a fitting reward for our efforts.

While Greg ventured onwards to conquer the summit of Lulu Mountain, I found solace in the tranquility of the Continental Divide, taking a moment to meditate and immerse myself in the beauty that surrounded me. It was a rare opportunity to be fully present in the moment, to connect with nature on a deeper level and find peace amidst the majesty of the mountains.

Reunited once more, Greg and I made our way to Michigan Lake, where we savored a well-deserved lunch amidst the pristine beauty of the high country. As we reflected on our journey and the beauty of Thunder Pass, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore and experience the wonders of Rocky Mountain National Park.
