Before bidding farewell to our mountain retreat, Bill, our friend Mike, and I embarked on a scenic tour of Engineer Pass, a breathtaking 21-mile drive renowned for its rugged beauty and rich mining history. Nestled between Ouray and Lake City, Engineer Pass stands as a testament to Colorado’s storied past and its enduring natural splendor. Despite the lingering smoke from nearby wildfires, we eagerly embraced the opportunity to traverse the challenging terrain and immerse ourselves in the rugged grandeur of the San Juan Mountains.
Ascending to an elevation of 12,800 feet above sea level, Engineer Pass offers sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and peaks, serving as a majestic vantage point along the renowned Alpine Loop. As we navigated the rough terrain and obstacles that once echoed with the rumble of mining buggies and early automobiles, we marveled at the resilience and ingenuity of those who carved out a living amidst the harsh conditions of Colorado’s mining era.
Remnants of old mining structures dotted the landscape, offering poignant glimpses into the bustling community that once thrived in the shadow of the mountains. The ghost town of Mineral Point, with its weathered buildings and silent streets, bore witness to the hopes and dreams of those who sought their fortune in the heart of the Rockies.

Amidst the rugged beauty of the pass, we encountered signs of nature’s raw power, including the aftermath of an avalanche that had left a trail of destruction in its wake. Yet, even in the face of adversity, the resilient spirit of the mountains endured, reflected in the cascading waterfalls and pristine streams that flowed from their rocky heights.
Our journey was not without its challenges, as we encountered a stranded side-by-side in need of assistance. With the help of our trusty winch, we were able to lend a hand and ensure the safe passage of our fellow adventurers—a reminder of the importance of preparedness and camaraderie in the backcountry.
As we descended from the pass toward Lake City, we were greeted by an unexpected sight—a vast flock of sheep grazing leisurely on the hillside, a surreal juxtaposition against the rugged backdrop of the mountains. It was a moment that epitomized the timeless beauty and boundless wonder of Colorado’s untamed wilderness.

Though our adventure on Engineer Pass may have come to an end, the memories of our journey will linger on—a testament to the enduring allure of the Rocky Mountains and the spirit of exploration that beckons us to seek new horizons, wherever our travels may lead.
Until next time, may your trails be filled with wonder, and your adventures be abundant!
