After a weekend spent mostly in the vehicle, the allure of the great outdoors beckoned, calling for a hike to stretch our legs and rejuvenate our spirits. Greg, Prince (our faithful canine companion), and I eagerly set out to tackle Herman Gulch, a round-trip journey spanning 7 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1800 feet. As we ventured into the wilderness, surrounded by majestic mountains, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of simplicity and contentment in the company of a dear friend and a loyal dog.

For me, Herman Gulch held a special significance, dating back to an attempt to hike the trail in 2002. At that time, hindered by poor physical condition and lingering knee issues, I had faltered after just half a mile, overwhelmed by doubt and uncertainty. Yet, with the passage of time came growth and resilience. Through dedication and perseverance, I had learned to prioritize self-care and embrace new challenges, gradually expanding my horizons and pushing past perceived limitations.
Returning to Herman Gulch in 2020, I was determined to rewrite the narrative of my previous attempt, replacing self-doubt with unwavering confidence and determination. As the trail wound its way through a fir-aspen forest, gradually steepening on a rocky path toward the lake, I drew upon the strength within me, emboldened by the knowledge that I had conquered greater obstacles in the past. With each step forward, I shed the shackles of doubt, embracing the exhilarating sense of freedom and empowerment that comes from overcoming adversity.
Arriving at the tranquil shores of the lake, a profound sense of accomplishment washed over me, mingled with gratitude for the journey that had led me to this moment. Sitting amidst the serene beauty of nature, I reflected on the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless potential that lies within each of us.
Feeling strong, accomplished, and blessed, I reveled in the simple yet profound joy of being alive, surrounded by the awe-inspiring majesty of the mountains. As we bid farewell to Herman Gulch, I carried with me not only memories of a challenging hike conquered but also a newfound sense of confidence and gratitude for the journey ahead.
Until next time, may your trails be filled with wonder, and your adventures be abundant!
