Day 2: Buckskin Gulch to Big Spring
As the first light of dawn illuminated the canyon walls, I awoke to a breathtaking display of colors and the sweet fragrance of flowers drifting through the air. Bill and Prince, our faithful canine companion, seemed equally enchanted by the beauty of our surroundings. With a sense of anticipation, we set out on the next leg of our journey—hiking 5 miles to Big Spring in Paria Canyon.
Exploring Paria Canyon:
Leaving behind the narrow confines of Buckskin Gulch, we ventured into the expansive landscape of Paria Canyon. The Paria River, though running low, provided a refreshing respite as we waded through its gentle currents. Along the riverbanks, we were greeted by vibrant purple flowers, adding a splash of color to the rugged terrain.

A Remote and Isolated Landscape:
As we hiked between towering walls of Navajo sandstone, the sheer scale of the canyon became apparent. Despite the similarities to the famed Zion Narrows, Paria Canyon offered a unique sense of remoteness and isolation—a wilderness untouched by the bustle of civilization. Amidst the vastness of the canyon, we felt small yet connected to the ancient landscape surrounding us.
Discovering Big Spring:
After a day of exploration, we finally reached our destination—Big Spring. Nestled within the canyon walls, the natural springs offered a welcome source of water, relieving us of the burden of carrying heavy packs. Our campsite, with its sandy banks and seeping water, provided a perfect oasis in the heart of the desert wilderness.
Underneath a Starlit Sky:
As night fell over Paria Canyon, we gathered around our campsite, mesmerized by the star-studded sky above. With no light pollution to obscure the view, the Milky Way stretched across the heavens, casting a celestial glow over our campsite. It was a moment of quiet reflection and wonder, a reminder of the beauty and majesty of the natural world.
Stay tuned for Day 3 as we continue our journey through the captivating landscapes of Paria Canyon.
