Our journey through the remote and captivating landscapes of the Orange Cliffs Unit in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Canyonlands Maze District began with eager anticipation. With our supplies carefully checked and ample provisions on hand, we departed from Hanksville, Utah, ready to embark on a 5-day adventure like no other.
Navigating the Maze District
As we made our way towards Hans Flat Ranger Station to obtain our permits, we marveled at the rugged beauty of the Maze District. With its distinct levels and varying elevations, the Maze presented us with a landscape unlike any other—a labyrinth of canyons, plateaus, and rock formations waiting to be explored.
Hiking to Horseshoe Canyon
Our first destination was Horseshoe Canyon, accessed via Deadman’s Trail. Steeped in history, this area has been traversed by Native Americans, outlaws, and settlers throughout the centuries. As we hiked to the overlook, we were treated to breathtaking views of the Great Gallery below—a testament to the ancient rock art that adorns these canyon walls. While we had previously visited the Great Gallery, we opted to forego the strenuous hike in favor of a leisurely lunch and reflection on the canyon’s rich history.
Campsite at Panorama Point
After our exploration of Horseshoe Canyon, we made our way to our first campsite at Panorama Point. Perched high on the canyon rim, our campsite offered panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including Elaterite Basin and Horse Canyon below. Arriving just before sunset, we were treated to a spectacular vista overlooking the vast expanse of Canyonlands—a fitting introduction to the adventures that lay ahead.

Looking Ahead
As we settled in for the evening, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement for the days to come. With our campfire glowing and the stars beginning to emerge overhead, we eagerly anticipated the adventures that awaited us in the days ahead. From rugged off-road drives to secluded hikes and awe-inspiring vistas, our journey through the Maze District promised to be an unforgettable experience.
Stay tuned for more updates from our exploration of the remote and captivating landscapes of Utah’s Canyonlands. Until then, may the spirit of adventure guide your path.
