Our second day in the Maze District of Canyonlands promised to be an adventure of epic proportions as we ventured deeper into the heart of this remote and rugged wilderness.
Breakdown and Exploration
After breaking down camp and loading up our gear into the Jeep, we began our day with a visit to Cleopatra’s Chair and the Flint Trail Overlook, soaking in the awe-inspiring views before us. With preparations complete, we set our sights on the daunting descent down the Flint Trail switchbacks—a dramatic series of switchbacks that wind their way down over 800 feet through the imposing Orange Cliffs.

Journey through Millard Canyon
As we descended below the rim, the landscape transformed before our eyes, revealing a starkly beautiful desert terrain punctuated by towering buttes and deep canyons. The road stretched before us, winding its way across a series of canyons and benches for the next 30 miles, each bend offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape.
Remote Campsite and Riverside Retreat
Our destination for the day was the remote Millard Canyon campsite, nestled along the banks of the Green River near the mouth of Millard Canyon. Despite its isolation, the ranger had assured us that this area offered unparalleled beauty and solitude—a hidden gem in the heart of the Maze District.
A Night Under the Stars
As we set up camp and cooled our feet in the refreshing waters of the Green River, we marveled at the tranquility of our surroundings. The sunset painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, casting a warm glow over the landscape. Later that evening, as we gathered around the campfire, I took charge of cooking a healthy meal—a fitting end to a day filled with adventure and exploration in the backcountry.
Looking Ahead
As we settled in for the night and gazed up at the star-filled sky above, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences that awaited us in the days ahead. With the Maze District stretching out before us, there was no telling what wonders we would encounter next on our journey through the remote and rugged landscapes of Canyonlands.
