Our journey through the Maze District of Canyonlands continued with another day of exploration and adventure amidst the rugged and remote landscapes that define this wilderness.
Time as the Ultimate Measure
In the Maze District, time takes on a new meaning as roads and trails are measured not in miles, but in hours. A mere one-mile trail can easily translate into an hour-long hike, while a five-mile stretch of road may take two or three hours to traverse. It’s a place where patience and a willingness to embrace the journey are essential.
Departure from Green River
Leaving the tranquil banks of the Green River behind us, we embarked on a 30-mile journey to the Golden Stairs—a remote and captivating destination that promised breathtaking views and unparalleled solitude. As we traversed through an open forest of pinion and juniper, the vastness of the landscape enveloped us, reminding us of our insignificance amidst the grandeur of nature.
The Narrow Mesa and China Neck
Our path led us to a long, narrow mesa, where we hiked out onto the exposed plateau, surrounded by sweeping vistas of Ernie’s County and the imposing fins that characterize the Maze District. Here, the landscape revealed its secrets, from the intriguing rock formations of Mother and Child to the winding Dollhouse Road below. As we ventured further, we encountered the China Neck—a narrow strip of land only 10 feet wide and 150 feet long—a precarious yet exhilarating vantage point from which to behold the rugged beauty of our surroundings.

Evening Reverie
As the day drew to a close, we gathered around the flickering flames of our campfire, the fading light casting long shadows across the landscape. With the clouds parting overhead, we were treated to a spectacular display of stars, their twinkling brilliance mirrored in the vast expanse of the Maze District. In this moment of quiet contemplation, we felt a profound connection to the untamed wilderness that surrounded us, humbled by its beauty and inspired by its timeless allure.
Reflections and Gratitude
As we retired to our tents beneath the canopy of stars, we couldn’t help but reflect on the experiences of the day and the journey that still lay ahead. With each passing moment, we were reminded of the profound privilege of exploring these remote and rugged landscapes, and the deep sense of gratitude that filled our hearts for the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the wonders of the Maze District.
