Venturing out from Downieville, Bill, Greg, and I embarked on an exhilarating off-road journey along the Red Elephant Hill OHV Trail. With our trusty 4-wheel-drive vehicles, we eagerly embraced the challenges and scenic wonders that awaited us on this rugged trail.

A Journey Through History:
Red Elephant Hill is not only renowned for its thrilling 4-wheel-drive experience but also for its rich historical significance. As we traversed the trail, we encountered remnants of the area’s vibrant mining past, including the iconic Empire Hilton Cabin and the remnants of the Red Elephant Mining Company’s operations. The scent of pine trees filled the air, a testament to the enduring beauty of the natural landscape.
Scenic Splendor and Mountain Majesty:
Amidst the challenging terrain, we were treated to breathtaking vistas of James Peak and the majestic snow-capped mountains that surrounded us. The trail offered a perfect blend of adrenaline-pumping adventure and awe-inspiring natural beauty, making every moment truly unforgettable.
A Well-Deserved Treat:
After conquering the trail, we made a pit stop in Empire, where we indulged in the delicious offerings of Great Shakes. The “avalanche” shake was a particular favorite, offering a refreshing reward for our accomplishments on the trail.
Our day on the Red Elephant Hill OHV Trail was a thrilling adventure filled with camaraderie, exploration, and the beauty of Colorado’s rugged wilderness.
