Greg and I embarked on our hiking adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) with excitement and anticipation. Our destination: Thunder Lake and the captivating Lake of Many Winds.
A Sunny Start:
The morning greeted us with clear skies and radiant sunshine, setting the perfect backdrop for our hike. As we made our way towards Thunder Lake, the melody of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” echoed in my mind, adding to the sense of adventure.
The Decision to Forge Ahead:
Arriving at Thunder Lake, we were greeted by the serene beauty of the landscape. In the distance, the path to Lake of Many Winds beckoned, tempting us with the promise of further exploration. Despite initial hesitation, I found the courage to tackle the ascent, spurred on by Greg’s encouragement.
A Vertical Challenge:
The hike to Lake of Many Winds proved to be a vertical challenge, demanding both physical endurance and mental fortitude. But with every step, we were rewarded with breathtaking vistas of cascading waterfalls and majestic mountains. The relentless climb eventually led us to the stunning alpine lake, nestled at an elevation of 11,610 feet.

Encounters with Wildlife:
On our descent, we were treated to a magical encounter as a few elk gracefully crossed our path, their presence adding to the enchantment of the mountainside. It was a reminder of the untamed beauty of the wilderness and the privilege of witnessing it firsthand.
A Tribute to Friendship:
As we immersed ourselves in the splendor of the Colorado wilderness, my thoughts turned to my friend Jackie, who was unable to join us on this journey. In her absence, I endeavored to capture the essence of our hike, from the vibrant wildflowers to the glistening waterfalls, as a tribute to her love for Colorado’s natural wonders.
Our day spent exploring Thunder Lake and Lake of Many Winds was a testament to the allure of RMNP and the wonders it holds. As we made our way back, our hearts were full of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty of the mountains and the camaraderie of the trail.
Until our next adventure, may the spirit of the wilderness guide our path and fill our souls with wonder and awe.
