Returning to Sand Dunes National Park, we decided to spice things up by venturing into the rugged wilderness of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. With two exhilarating four-wheel-drive roads, Medano Pass and Hayden Pass, awaiting our exploration, it promised to be a day filled with adrenaline and raw mountain beauty.
Medano Pass Primitive Road:
Our journey began with the Medano Pass Primitive Road, winding through soft, sandy sections near the dunes before leading us on a thrilling adventure across Medano Creek, crossing it nine times before reaching the summit of Medano Pass. As we navigated the challenging terrain, the rugged beauty of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness unfolded around us, a testament to the untamed power of nature.
Hayden Pass Road:
Next, we tackled Hayden Pass Road, a challenging and scenic route boasting grades of up to 20%. Despite the potential hazards posed by the burn scar, including falling trees and flash flooding, we pressed on, eager to soak in the panoramic views of the San Luis Valley. With the road to ourselves, we reveled in the solitude of the wilderness, each turn revealing new vistas and hidden wonders.
The Ultimate Off-Roading Experience:
Combining a mix of 4×4 and paved roads, our journey covered approximately 90 miles and boasted an impressive elevation gain of around 8,400 feet. From the sandy expanses near the dunes to the rugged mountain passes of the Sangre de Cristo range, each moment was filled with excitement and awe-inspiring beauty.
As we bid farewell to Medano Pass and Hayden Pass, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore such pristine wilderness. Until our next off-roading adventure, may the spirit of the mountains continue to call us back to the untamed beauty of the great outdoors.
