Embark on a thrilling adventure through the rich history and stunning scenery of San Isabel and Gunnison National Forests, where towering peaks and historic towns await. Our journey took us along four high-altitude off-road trails, through four historical towns, across three mountain passes, and past a tranquil lake, offering a glimpse into the rugged beauty of the Colorado wilderness.
Setting Out from Buena Vista:
Our adventure began in Buena Vista, Colorado, where we set up camp and prepared to explore the rugged backcountry of the San Isabel and Gunnison National Forests. Our goal: to complete a 46-mile off-road loop, traversing Tin Cup, Cumberland, Alpine Tunnel, and Hancock, with three mountain passes reaching heights above 12,000 feet.
Exploring St. Elmo:
Our first stop was the historic town of St. Elmo, founded in 1880 and nestled in the heart of the Sawatch Range. As we wandered the streets, we were transported back in time, surrounded by 43 well-preserved historical buildings. The General Store, still active to this day, provided a charming glimpse into the town’s past, while chipmunks and hummingbirds added to the enchanting atmosphere.
Ascending Tin Cup Pass:
Continuing on our journey, we made our way towards Tin Cup Pass, tracing the path of a wagon road built in 1881 to transport supplies between Tin Cup and St. Elmo. As we ascended to the pass, we crossed the Continental Divide, marking the first of two crossings on our loop. Despite the breathtaking scenery, we pressed on, eager to explore further.
Navigating Mirror Lake:
Descending into the gulch, we encountered Mirror Lake, a serene oasis nestled amidst the rugged landscape. However, our journey took an unexpected turn as the lake, swollen with water, covered the road in several spots. Undeterred, we forged ahead, navigating through the shimmering waters and continuing on our adventure through the untamed wilderness.
As we continued our journey through San Isabel and Gunnison National Forests, we were captivated by the rich history and unparalleled beauty of the region. From the ghostly streets of St. Elmo to the breathtaking vistas of Tin Cup Pass, each stop along the way offered a glimpse into the storied past and rugged landscapes of Colorado’s backcountry. Join us for Part 2 as we continue our exploration of this remarkable wilderness.
