Exploring Historic Trails and Breathtaking Vistas: San Isabel and Gunnison National Forest (Part 2)

Join us as we continue our journey through the rich history and stunning landscapes of San Isabel and Gunnison National Forests. Part 2 of our adventure takes us across Cumberland Pass, Hancock Pass, and the ghost town of Woodstock, offering a glimpse into the rugged beauty and storied past of Colorado’s backcountry.

Cumberland Pass: A Scenic Oasis:
Cumberland Pass emerges as a highlight of our journey, offering a picturesque setting for a well-deserved lunch break. Built in 1882 to connect the mining towns of Pitkin and Tin Cup, the road over Cumberland Pass treats us to breathtaking views as soon as we ascend above the tree line, leaving us in awe of the majestic scenery that unfolds before us.

Traversing Hancock Pass:
Continuing our exploration, we make our way towards Hancock Pass, our second crossing over the Continental Divide. This leg of our journey proves to be the most technical of all the 4×4 trails, as we navigate the rugged terrain along Hancock Road and Alpine Tunnel Road. Along the way, remnants of the original narrow-gauge railroad from the 1880s provide a fascinating glimpse into the region’s mining history, with structures and signage offering insights into the town of Woodstock and its tragic past.

Descending into History:
As we descend Hancock Pass, the rocky terrain presents a challenge, requiring patience and precision as we navigate the rugged landscape. Despite the slow going, the journey is filled with excitement and anticipation, as we marvel at the rugged beauty and rich history that surrounds us.

Reflections by the Campfire:
Returning to camp, we find solace in the warmth of the campfire, as we relax and reminisce about the day’s adventures. Entranced by the beauty of the sights we have seen, we eagerly discuss plans for our next visit, eager to explore new trails and discover more of the hidden gems that await in San Isabel and Gunnison National Forests.

As we bid farewell to San Isabel and Gunnison National Forests, we carry with us memories of rugged trails, historic towns, and breathtaking vistas that will last a lifetime. Join us for our next adventure as we continue to explore the wonders of Colorado’s wilderness, one trail at a time.
