Exploring the Majesty of Canyonlands: Overlanding the White Rim Trail – Day 2

Day 2: Exploring the Southern End

As the sun rose over the rugged landscape of Canyonlands National Park, we awoke to the stunning views from our campsite at White Crack Camp. Named after a crack in the White Rim Sandstone, this spot offered unparalleled vistas of the surrounding canyons and distant mesas. Eager to soak in every moment of our adventure, Lidie and I embarked on a morning walk along the edge of the plateau, taking in the panoramic beauty of each Canyonlands district. Bill soon joined us, and together we reluctantly bid farewell to our idyllic campsite and the majestic Colorado River below.

Our journey continued along the White Rim Road, a 34-mile stretch that promised more breathtaking scenery and memorable experiences. Ascending the west side of Grandview Point, we were treated to sweeping views of Murphy Basin, where the Green River snaked its way through the rugged landscape. Amidst the ancient rock formations, we spotted iconic landmarks of the Maze District, reminding us of the rich geological history of this remote wilderness.

As we descended into Soda Springs Basin, the landscape unfolded before us, revealing hidden treasures such as the Green River gooseneck and ancient cliff dwellings. We paused to admire the expansive vista of the “Black Crack,” a geological marvel etched into the desert terrain. Along the way, we couldn’t resist exploring a small slot canyon, its narrow walls leading us deeper into the ancient sandstone until we reached a dramatic pour-off.

Spotting deer crossing the road and finally arriving at Potato Bottom, our next campsite beckoned with its serene setting beneath towering cottonwood trees along the riverbank. As evening descended, we indulged in delicious shrimp tacos, toasted marshmallows for s’mores, and unwound by the propane firepit. We savored the simple joys of outdoor living amidst the splendor of Canyonlands. Together we watched the stars emerge as the moon set behind the canyon walls.

Another day in the canyon drew to a close, filled with adventure, discovery, and the serenity of nature. Here’s to many more unforgettable moments in this wild and beautiful landscape.
