Amidst the hustle and bustle of Interstate 70, Bill and I found ourselves drawn to a place where time stood still – the Rabbit Valley Trail Through Time in Colorado. Nestled just two miles from the Utah-Colorado border, this hidden gem offered a brief respite from our journey, inviting us to embark on a fascinating expedition through the annals of prehistoric history.

Setting foot on the trail, we were immediately captivated by the serene beauty of Rabbit Valley, its rugged terrain concealing secrets dating back millions of years. As we traversed the easy 1.6-mile hike, guided by markers pointing out dinosaur bones embedded in the rocks, we couldn’t help but marvel at the wonders of the Jurassic Age that lay before us.

The trail, part of the Rabbit Valley Research Natural Area, is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Museum of Western Colorado and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), preserving a rich tapestry of ancient fossils and geological formations. Along the way, we encountered skeletal remains of creatures that roamed the earth 140 million years ago, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Eight species of dinosaurs have been found dating from the late Jurassic Period.

Among the highlights of our journey were the plant fossils, hidden treasures waiting to be discovered amidst the rocky terrain. Thanks to informative signs dotting the trail, we gained insight into the mining history of the area, the diverse geology of the region, and the meticulous process of fossil excavation.

As we traced the footsteps of ancient giants and marveled at the intricate details preserved in stone, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for the timeless wonders of the natural world. With each passing moment, the Rabbit Valley Trail Through Time offered a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of life on Earth, inviting us to contemplate the mysteries of the past and the boundless possibilities of the future.
