Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake – Sky Camp
Bill, Greg, and I embarked on a lifetime adventure through the sacred Peruvian Andes. After a couple of days in Cusco, the heart of the Inca Empire, we were eager to begin our 6-day adventure. Our journey started bright and early at 4:00 am. We met our guide, Porfi, who would lead us through the Salkantay trek. After gathering the rest of our group, we headed to Mollepata for a delicious breakfast, basking in the morning glow of the mountains.

With our spirits high and stomachs full, we continued to Challacancha, the starting point of our trek. In the distance, the majestic Humantay Mountain and its glaciers stood tall. The trail followed an ancient Inca water canal, still in use by local farmers today. As we approached Soraypampa, situated at the base of Humantay Lake at 12,795 feet, we were greeted by grazing llamas, cascading waterfalls, towering peaks, the famous Sky Camp glass domes, and countless horses grazing in the valley and hillside.
Arrival at Soraypampa and Hiking to Humantay Lake
Once we arrived at Soraypampa, we settled into our Sky Camp domes and enjoyed a fantastic lunch. Refreshed and ready, we set off for Humantay Lake, ascending to 13,780 feet. The lake, formed by receding glaciers thousands of years ago, dazzled with its pristine, turquoise waters. Nestled against the Humantay Glacier, the lake’s beauty was mesmerizing. We spent an hour exploring, spotting a vizcacha, and watching the sunset behind the mountains. Porfi shared the cultural significance of the mountains in Andean culture, revered as sacred sites and sources of positive energy and healing.
After our exploration, we returned to Soraypampa for a delicious dinner, reflecting on the day with our group. We then retired to our glass domes, snuggling into warm sleeping bags and gazing at the starry night sky. Day 1 ended perfectly, with Salkantay Mountain looming in the distance, ready to challenge us on day 2.
Stay tuned for the next part of our incredible journey through the Andes!
