Day 3: Collpapampa – Loreta – La Playa – Lucmabamba – Cocalmayo – Jungle Domes
Day 3 of our Salkantay Trek was a welcome reprieve after the strenuous day 2. Starting early at 4:30 am with coca tea, we set off on a relatively easier trek through the lush Santa Teresa Valley. With recent rains making the path muddy, we opted to hike along the dirt road instead of the riverside path. The trail was mostly downhill, allowing us to fully enjoy the vibrant landscape of rivers, waterfalls, flowers, and diverse plantations.
Journey Through the Santa Teresa Valley
As we descended into the tropical climate, the vegetation became more abundant. We encountered natural strawberries, granadilla, and avocado plants growing along the road. The valley was teeming with life, and we took in the lush greenery and flowing rivers.
Several small villages dotted our route, each offering shops where we could rest, buy water, and enjoy snacks. During one of these breaks, Bill, Greg, and I tried granadilla, a cousin to the passion fruit. Its sweet and tangy flavor was a delightful treat.
Coffee Lesson in Lucmabamba
Our trek led us to the main village of Lucmabamba, where we were treated to a fascinating lesson on coffee production. We learned about the entire process, from harvesting the beans to peeling and roasting them. We even got to roast the beans ourselves and grind them to make fresh espresso. It was the freshest and most delicious cup of coffee we had in Peru.
Arrival at the Jungle Domes
After our coffee experience, we continued to our camp at the Jungle Domes, located at the edge of the village. We settled in and enjoyed a special lunch prepared by the staff. The meal was the highlight of our trek, with beautifully presented dishes that were both delicious and satisfying.

Relaxation at Cocalmayo Hot Springs
Post-lunch, we took a van to the Cocalmayo hot springs, where we soaked in natural warm spring water. The soothing bath was a perfect way to relax our tired muscles after days of hiking. The serene atmosphere and warm water provided much-needed comfort.
Returning to Lucmabamba, we had another fantastic dinner before retreating to our Jungle Domes. As we lay in our comfortable accommodations, we reflected on the day’s adventures and wondered what sights and experiences awaited us on day 4.
