Day 6: Keyhole Canyon, The Beloved Little Technical Canyon
Nestled in the heart of southwestern Utah, Zion National Park is one of the most iconic and stunning natural landscapes in the United States. Known for its towering red cliffs, narrow slot canyons, and the Virgin River carving its way through the majestic landscape, Zion offers adventurers a mix of breathtaking views and heart-pounding experiences. From hiking the famed Angels Landing to exploring the narrows of its slot canyons, Zion attracts visitors from around the world. Among its hidden gems is Keyhole Canyon—a short but thrilling technical canyoneering route that offers a taste of Zion’s wild and rugged beauty.
Bill and I, along with a group of good friends, set off on an unforgettable adventure through Keyhole Slot Canyon in Zion National Park. Known for its stunning, narrow corridors and a mix of technical challenges, Keyhole offers a thrilling and intimate canyoneering experience that feels like a journey into another world. This was our first time exploring Keyhole, and it lived up to all the stories—we were blown away by the beauty and adventure packed into such a small space.
A Subterranean Wonderland
Keyhole Canyon may be short, but its enchanting, almost otherworldly scenery makes it a beloved destination for both experienced canyoneers and first-timers like us. As we entered the narrow passages, the towering sandstone walls immediately engulfed us, casting soft, dappled light that danced along the smooth, water-carved rock. The sandstone, with its layers of reds, oranges, and golds, seemed to pulse with life, creating a magical atmosphere that heightened our sense of awe and adventure.

The Early Start and Steep Approach
It was the last day of our rendezvous, and we were looking for a quick but memorable outing. The six of us left early, making our way to the designated parking area, which, due to its small size, is another reason to arrive before the crowds. Once we parked, we suited up in our wetsuits, excited for the chilly pools awaiting us in the canyon.
The approach was steep right from the start, climbing up a rugged trail that quickly tested my legs. Reaching the top felt like we had earned our entrance into this hidden slot world, and then we descended down a sharp, sandy trail that delivered us into the mouth of Keyhole Canyon itself.

The Heart of the Adventure – Rappels, Scrambles, and Pools
Once inside, the canyon’s true magic revealed itself. The air was cool, the walls narrow, and the sense of adventure palpable. There are three rappels within Keyhole, the tallest being about 25 feet, but the tight spaces and tricky downclimbs between the rappels kept us on our toes. The pools of water—dark and cool—waited for us in the shadowy crevices. Luckily, the water levels were just low enough to keep us comfortable without getting too cold, adding to the perfect balance of thrill and fun.
The sandstone walls around us felt almost alive, shaped by centuries of water and wind into smooth, curving forms. At certain moments, the canyon narrowed so much that we had to squeeze through tight spaces, feeling the cool, damp rock against our wetsuits. With every turn, the light shifted, revealing the canyon in different hues—sometimes glowing orange in the sunlight, other times fading to deep reds and purples in the shaded slots.

A Moment of Joy in the Canyon
At one point, while the team was busy setting up for the next rappel, Bill and I found ourselves standing in a pool of water. The sheer beauty of the moment inspired us to do something spontaneous—right there, in the middle of the canyon, we started to dance. It was just a brief moment of joy, with the cool rock walls echoing our laughter. In that stillness, surrounded by ancient stone, it felt like the canyon itself was a witness to our shared moment of freedom and fun.
The 100-Foot Swim
The highlight was the crux of the canyon, where we reached a long, narrow swimming corridor. The swim stretched for about 100 feet, and though it seemed intimidating at first, it added to the thrill. We made it across, laughing about how unexpectedly cool it was to swim in the narrow slot.

Exiting Into the Open and Reflections
As we scrambled through the final downclimb and emerged from the canyon, the warmth of the sunlight greeted us like an old friend. The contrast between the shadowy, cool confines of the slot and the wide-open Zion landscape felt surreal. We followed the trail back to the road, our hearts still pounding with excitement, and celebrated with high-fives all around.
Looking back, this Keyhole adventure wasn’t just about the technical challenge—it was about connecting with nature and each other. Canyoning is more than the rappels and the scrambles. It’s about those moments of awe, where you feel humbled by the landscape, and the playful, light-hearted moments, like dancing in a slot canyon. Keyhole may be a small canyon, but the memories we made there will stay with us forever.
Keyhole Canyon was a highlight of our trip to Zion, and I’m so glad we had the chance to explore it with such a great crew!
