Today, Bill and I took on an exhilarating challenge—we attended the “Intro to Ice Climbing Clinic & Happy Hour” with Summit Ascents International and spent an unforgettable day ice climbing in Boulder Canyon, Colorado.
A Frosty Morning in Boulder Canyon
The day began with the crisp, invigorating air of Boulder Canyon greeting us as we arrived at the meeting point. The landscape was a winter wonderland, with the frozen canyon walls sparkling in the early morning light. Our excitement was palpable as we geared up, ready to conquer the ice once more.
Refreshing Our Skills
Even though this wasn’t our first ice climbing experience, the clinic offered a great opportunity to refresh our skills and learn some new techniques. Our knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructors from Summit Ascents International kicked off the clinic with a thorough review of ice climbing basics. We revisited essential gear like crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and helmets, and received demonstrations of advanced techniques for ascending and descending the ice, with a strong emphasis on safety.

Climbing the Frozen Giants
With our skills refreshed and gear in place, we approached the frozen waterfalls of Boulder Canyon. The sight of these towering ice formations was both awe-inspiring and a bit intimidating. Our instructors guided us through a series of climbs, starting with easier routes to build our confidence and gradually moving to more challenging sections.
The sensation of driving an ice axe into the ice and feeling it hold firm was incredibly satisfying. Each step required precise placement of our crampons, and the sound of metal spikes gripping the ice echoed through the canyon. Despite the physical exertion, the breathtaking views and the thrill of the climb made every effort worthwhile.
Bonding with Fellow Climbers
As the day went on, we bonded with our fellow climbers, sharing tips, encouragement, and plenty of laughs. The camaraderie among the group added to the overall enjoyment of the experience. It was inspiring to see climbers of all skill levels supporting each other and celebrating each small victory.
Reflecting on Our Ice Climbing Adventure
Today’s “Intro to Ice Climbing Clinic & Happy Hour” with Summit Ascents International was an incredible experience that pushed us out of our comfort zones and deepened our love for ice climbing. The stunning beauty of Boulder Canyon, the expertise of our instructors, and the sense of accomplishment we felt after each climb made it a day to remember.
Ice climbing is a unique and thrilling sport that offers a new perspective on winter adventures. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or new to the sport, I highly recommend giving ice climbing a try. Summit Ascents International provided an excellent experience, and we can’t wait to continue our ice climbing journey.
Here’s to new adventures and the thrill of reaching new heights!
