To celebrate Bill’s birthday in style, we opted for a serene weekend getaway at Paonia State Park, nestled amidst the breathtaking Ragged Mountains. Despite the smoky haze from distant wildfires in California, the beauty of the canyon was still palpable, offering us a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Exploring Kebler Pass:
With the reservoir at Paonia State Park drained, we decided to embark on a scenic drive up Kebler Pass, renowned for its stunning vistas and picturesque lakes. As we wound our way through the pass, we were greeted by the sight of one of the largest aspen groves in the United States, their leaves shimmering in the sunlight. The abundance of wildflowers added a splash of vibrant color to the landscape, enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Lost Lake Adventure:
Our journey took us past the prominent Marcellina Mountain, nestled between the West Elk and Ragged Wildernesses. At an elevation of 9,600 feet, we discovered the tranquil Lost Lake, its pristine waters beckoning us for a kayaking adventure with our beloved dogs. Despite the chilly temperature, the experience was invigorating, offering us a chance to connect with nature in its purest form.
Grilling Under the Stars:
After a day filled with outdoor adventures, we returned to our campsite and indulged in a delicious feast of carne asada steaks grilled over an open fire. The crackling flames cast a warm glow over our evening, creating the perfect ambiance for celebrating Bill’s special day amidst the splendor of the great outdoors.
Our weekend getaway at Paonia State Park was a delightful blend of relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty, providing us with cherished memories that we will treasure for years to come. As we bid farewell to the Ragged Mountains and the idyllic surroundings of Paonia, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to celebrate Bill’s birthday in such a magical setting.
