Crossing Into Alaska

The next two days were packed with adventure and major milestones on this Alaska road trip.

First, I crossed the mighty Yukon River on the George Black ferry, a unique experience and another reminder of just how remote northern Canada can be. From there, I continued toward one of the most memorable border crossings I’ve ever experienced: the famous Top of the World Border Crossing, where the Yukon meets Alaska.

The border crossing itself was surprisingly relaxed. The agent seemed far more interested in talking about the Jeep than asking questions about me. In fact, if I hadn’t handed him my passport, I’m not sure he would have remembered to ask for it.

After officially entering Alaska, I continued to Chicken, Alaska, one of the most unique and historic communities along the route. The journey there included traveling the renowned Top of the World Highway, a spectacular route known for its sweeping mountain vistas and endless wilderness views.

I used the term “highway” loosely, though. Much of what qualifies as a highway in northern Canada and Alaska would be considered a rough backroad elsewhere. Long stretches of gravel, dirt, and pothole-ridden pavement made the route feel more like an overlanding adventure than a traditional road trip. For me, that was part of the appeal.

The rugged roads, remote landscapes, and complete absence of crowds were exactly what made this part of the journey so special.

With another unforgettable stretch of wilderness behind me, I finally made my way to Fairbanks, Alaska, where one of the highlights of the trip awaited: picking up Crystal at the airport. After thousands of miles of driving, the Alaska adventure became a shared journey once again.

Looking back, crossing into Alaska marked the beginning of an entirely new chapter of the expedition. The landscapes grew bigger, the distances longer, and the sense of adventure even stronger.
