Day 1: Buckskin Gulch
Embarking on a journey of exploration and adventure, Bill, Jackie, and I set out for Buckskin Gulch—a rugged slot canyon renowned for its stunning beauty and challenging terrain. Having hiked Wire Pass Canyon the previous summer, we were inspired to tackle the entire length of Buckskin Gulch and Paria Canyon for our fall backpacking trip.

A Long Journey Begins:
With determination in our hearts and packs on our backs, we began our trek at the crack of dawn, eager to conquer the 16-mile stretch of Buckskin Gulch from start to finish. Opting to forgo any shortcuts, we embraced the full length of the trail, knowing that every step would bring us closer to our goal.
Challenges Along the Way:
As we made our way through the narrow slot canyon, we encountered various obstacles and challenges along the path. The weight of our packs tested our endurance, while navigating through tight corridors and muddy pools required focus and determination. Yet, with each challenge we faced, we remained steadfast in our resolve, fueled by the promise of adventure that lay ahead.
A Majestic Landscape:
Despite the obstacles, the beauty of Buckskin Gulch captivated us at every turn. Towering red sandstone walls rose high above us, casting a surreal glow in the early morning light. The echoes of past flash floods reverberated through the canyon, serving as a reminder of the raw power of nature.
Finding Sanctuary:
As the day drew to a close, we were relieved to find a picturesque campsite nestled along the confluence of Buckskin Gulch and Paria Canyon. Here, surrounded by the majestic beauty of the canyon walls, we set up camp and reflected on the day’s journey—a testament to the spirit of adventure and camaraderie that united us on this unforgettable expedition.
Stay tuned for Day 2 of our Buckskin Gulch adventure as we continue our exploration into the heart of the canyon.
