Day 8 of Our Epic 2,500-Mile Journey: A Scenic, Serendipitous Adventure

Sunrise at Lake Powell
Waking up to the sun rising over Lake Powell was the perfect way to start our final full day of this adventure. The stillness of the morning, with soft light reflecting off the calm water, felt both peaceful and energizing. As we packed up camp, I couldn’t help but feel bittersweet about leaving this stunning spot behind. But the journey wasn’t over yet, and we were eager to continue exploring.

Johnson Canyon Road: A Scenic Detour
Making our way toward Kanab, we stumbled upon Johnson Canyon Road. On a whim, Bill and I decided to take the scenic drive, and it turned out to be an incredible detour. The colorful cliffs, unique rock formations, and the vast desert vistas made for breathtaking views. This drive felt like stepping into an old Western movie, especially knowing this area was used as a filming location for so many of them. The quiet, off-the-beaten-path road provided a serene escape and an immersive experience of southern Utah’s rugged beauty.

Mystic Hot Springs: Relaxation and Warmth

After reaching Glendale and heading north, we made a stop at Mystic Hot Springs in Monroe, Utah. This tranquil retreat, known for its natural geothermal pools nestled against stunning red rock formations, had been on my radar for a while. I was excited to experience its quirky, artistic atmosphere and explore the unique pools. The warm, mineral-rich water cascading from terraced springs into vintage bathtubs, providing the perfect place to unwind after days of hiking and camping. Soaking my sore muscles in a pool with under a gentle waterfall was the highlight, and the peaceful ambiance, combined with the artistic charm, made the experience unforgettable.

The Mesmerizing San Rafael Swell and Salt Wash View Area
Back on Interstate 70, between Salina and Green River, we found ourselves entranced by the vast and rugged landscape of the San Rafael Swell. My forehead was practically pressed against the window as we took it all in. We decided to pull over at the Salt Wash View Area, a scenic overlook that offers expansive views of mesas, washes, and distant mountains. The stark beauty of Utah’s desert was on full display here. As the golden hour approached, the warm hues of the setting sun transformed the landscape into a living painting. We took a moment to breathe it all in—this was the kind of beauty that stays with you.

Dinner at Tacos La Pasadita: A Hidden Gem
Reaching Green River, we stopped for dinner at Tacos La Pasadita, an unassuming taco truck tucked under the awning of an old gas station. It was an unexpected gem! The truck offered authentic, delicious Mexican street food, and we enjoyed our meal al fresco at the makeshift tables. There was something charming about dining where gas pumps once stood, a nostalgic nod to the area’s past. The tacos were amazing, with fresh ingredients and bold flavors—a perfect refuel after a long day.

Camping in the Remote Desert
With dinner behind us, we loaded up and headed into the darkness of the desert. We took Lower San Rafael Road, navigating its twists and turns until we found a dispersed camping spot. The November night was cold and windy, and while the group huddled around a fire, I opted to stay bundled up in my sleeping bag in the Jeep, avoiding the relentless wind. Watching the others rotate around the fire like hot dogs on a roller grill made me chuckle. Cozy in my sleeping bag, I soon drifted off, the cold night fading as sleep took over.

A Chilly Morning and a Surprise at Horseshoe Canyon
The next morning was chilly, and the sun had yet to rise. It was our last day on the road, and a long drive awaited us. After packing up camp and saying goodbye to the group, we set off toward Route 24. As we traveled down the dirt road, we unexpectedly came across a sign for Horseshoe Canyon, part of Canyonlands National Park. I couldn’t believe how close we were to the trailhead, a place I had read so much about. Though we didn’t have time to hike into the canyon, just being there, standing at the trailhead with the first rays of sunlight warming us, felt incredible. The Great Gallery would have to wait for another trip, but I was thrilled to be so close.

A Journey to Remember
As we left the trailhead and continued down the road, the desert landscape opened up before us, with sand dunes and open skies as far as the eye could see. I knew this trip was something special—a journey filled with exploration, adventure, and unexpected beauty at every turn. From Colorado to Utah, Arizona, and back again, these eight days had given us memories that would last a lifetime. As we headed home, my mind was already planning the next adventure.

Reflection on the Journey
Looking back, this trip was more than just miles covered and sights seen—it was a reminder of nature’s power, the thrill of spontaneity, and the simple joy of being on the road. Whether it was soaking in a hot spring, hiking rugged trails, or sitting by a campfire, each day brought a new experience and a deeper appreciation for the world around us.

As I reflect on this epic 8-day adventure, I’m reminded of how this was the first trip Bill and I shared. It was on this journey that we discovered our mutual love for the outdoors— a connection that has only grown over the years as we’ve embarked on countless other adventures together. The thrill of spontaneity, the freedom of the open road, and the simple joy of exploring the unknown are what brought us together and continue to fuel our love for adventure. Whether we’re winding through remote desert roads or pausing at unexpected overlooks, each adventure is filled with moments that test our strength, deepen our connection, and remind us of the beauty in both nature and our partnership. This trip will forever hold a special place in my heart as the beginning of something extraordinary—a shared passion for discovery, exploration, and the joy of being on the road together.
